A new national political party, Welfare Party of India, was launched during a national convention on “Towards Value Based Politics” held in the Capital on April 18. The party was launched with the total support of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind and some other concerned citizens of the country.
Mujtaba Farooque of Aurangabad, Maharashtra was elected president of the party while Mr Ilyas Azmi, ex MP; Fr. Abraham Joseph from Kerala; Maulana Abdul Wahab Khilji, Dr. Zafrul Islam Khan, Editor Milli Gazette and working president of All India Muslim Majlis-e-Mushawarat; Mrs Lalitha Naik, social activist from Bangalore and former Minister of Karnataka Government were named as Vice Presidents of the party.

Dr SQR Illyas, Prof Sohail Ahmed Khan, Prof. Rama Panchal, Mrs. Khalida Parveen and Mr. P.C. Hamza were elected General Secretaries of the party.
This is the first time Jamaat-e-Islami Hind has allowed its members to participate actively in politics. Over hundred concerned citizens from across the country came together and formed the new political party.
After launching the party, Dr SQR Ilyas, the convenor of the convention and General Secretary of the Party introduced the party before media persons at Press Club of India and said, “This will not be just another party engaged in power politics. This will be rather a movement for reforming the Indian politics and will try to realise a welfare state based on moral values and governed by the principles of Justice, Freedom, Equality and Fraternity.” He further added, “It is not for short term political gains; it has rather embarked on a long term mission to evolve an alternative political culture in the country.”
Dr Ilyas also said, “The hundred founders of the party belong to varied backgrounds, communities, classes and social groups and they will soon launch mass-contact campaigns to enrol people of outstanding moral repute and flawless character. Only those individuals will be allowed entry into the party who can prove by word and deed, their commitment to the values and vision of the party.”  
Mr Mujtaba Farooque, president of the party said in the press conference that the Welfare Party of India is a secular party, will be backed by reputed social organisations and civil societies and will strive for thriving an alternative politics and shall attempt to emerge on the horizon of Indian politics as the voice of the voiceless, the hope for justice and as a harbinger of a new India.”
Mr Farooque further said, “To achieve this objective, the party will launch massive public campaigns and will awaken the socio-political public consciousness. It will try to inculcate in common man self esteem, self confidence and ambition and courage to fight oppression and exploitation. It will try to promote able and virtuous leadership among masses and shall try to advance alternative politics in the country through this social struggle.”
