Lucknow - 19 July 2011: Promising value based politics, the newly formed Welfare Party of India (WPI) will launch its state unit in a convention on Thursday at Lucknow. Formed three months ago, the WPI is the political arm of six decade old Jamaat-e-Islami Hind, a socio-religious Muslim organisation.
The office bearers of WPI during an interaction with media on Tuesday claimed to work for the 'aam aadmi' during their political journey. "All the political parties are cheating the common man. Corruption has become an institutionalised affair in the country. Politics too has become pro-rich and we want to work for the poor," said national general secretary, SQR Ilyas of WPI.
Responding to a query, Ilyas stated that the WPI has extended its support to Anna Hazare's model of Jan Lokpal bill and favoured inclusion of judiciary and prime minister within its purview.
Over the recent serial bomb blasts in Mumbai, he claimed that the whole Muslim community is tainted as villain by the investigating agencies. "Hardly any Muslim youth has been convicted in court for terror activities. The agencies are picking up Muslim youths after every incident," he said.
Another WPI leader and former MP Ilyas Azmi stated that the blasts are a conspiracy to divert attention from the scams which are surfacing daily. "Congress is at the receiving end with the number of scams. The blasts are planned in a manner to divert country'sattention. Muslim youths are falsely implicated by security agencies," said Azmi.
Over the death of Faiz Usmani who was picked up by Mumbai police after the blasts, he claimed: "Faiz belonged to the illustrious family of Brigadier Usman and he can never be a terrorist. He was picked up and tortured to death by police at the behest of Congress government," he said.
The WPI leaders also stated that they are open for adjustment with other like minded political parties during election. "We are doing our bit and have been registered as a political outfit with the election commission. Our units are now functioning in five states including Kerala, West Bengal, Karnataka, Rajasthan and Andhra Pradesh. Our next destination is UP and we hope to make our presence felt during the upcoming 2012 assembly elections," said Ilyas.
